Cook Memorial Public Library District and 26 other area libraries provide access to over 1,800 downloadable eAudiobooks and eBooks from NetLibrary. This service will only be available through mid-2009. You may already be familiar with our audiobook collection of over 5,000 professional readings of books on CD and cassette for adults and children. eAudiobooks are digital versions of audiobooks that are available via the Internet. They can be played on your computer with compatible software and may be transferred to a wide range of compatible portable devices, including portable music players, portable media centers, Pocket PCs and select smartphone devices. iPods are not compatible with NetLibrary's eAudiobooks service (options). View a short, self-guided demonstration that provides an overview of how to use the NetLibrary eAudiobook collection. There are four steps to using NetLibrary's eAudiobooks.
1. Create a NetLibrary Account To checkout eAudiobooks, you must first create a NetLibrary account. Cook Memorial Public Library District card holders may create an account from home, at Cook Memorial Library, or at Evergreen Interim Library.
Card holders from other libraries. If your home library does not offer this service, visit Cook Memorial Library or Evergreen Interim Library to create an account. Bring your library card and use one of our public PCs to create an account using the directions above. 2. Access the NetLibrary Collection There are three ways to access the eAudiobook collection.
NetLibrary offers a Basic Search and an Advanced Search (more). To browse through a complete list of NetLibrary eAudiobooks, view the In Our Collection area on the right side of the NetLibrary Home page and click the eAudiobooks link. Prefer to browse through a list by genre or topic? Click the Browse by Subject link in the In Our Collection area on the right side of the NetLibrary Home page. Click the Show Details link below each title to view detailed information on a title. You can also find eAudiobooks in our Online Catalog. Search for a specific title or the keywords, downloadable audiobooks. Narrow your search even more by including the title or author's name in your search (for example, emily dickinson downloadable audiobooks) eAudiobooks check out for 21 days. You may have a maximum of 10 eAudiobooks checked out at one time. It is best to download an eAudiobook on the computer on which you intend to use the file; however, eAudiobooks can be downloaded to your USB drive on a public PC at Cook Memorial Library or Evergreen Interim Library and activated at home. Transfer to a Portable Listening Device Before transferring an eAudiobook to a portable device, you must open it once on your computer to acquire and activate the user license for the eAudiobook. You can then transfer the title to the portable device using your media player. Please refer to your media player software's help section for instructions on transferring files to your portable device. NetLibrary offers instructions for transferring eAudioboks to portable devices using Windows Media Player v. 9 and 10. In Windows Media Player v. 10, this information and more can be found in Help/Using the Player/Synchronizing content to devices/Synchronizing media items to your device/To synchronize content manually. An eAudiobook can be renewed 3 times. You may renew an eAudiobook at any point during the checkout period. The renewal extends your checkout for 21 days from the time of the renewal.
If you attempt to open an expired eAudiobook from your media player, you will be prompted to log into NetLibrary and renew checkout. Detailed information on how to use NetLibrary's eAudiobooks is available from the Help section of the NetLibrary web site. Context-sensitive tips are also available on each page. Read the Portable Listening Device Consumer File available at the Adult Services Reference Desk at Cook Memorial Library and Evergreen Interim Library. It contains additional information and articles on purchasing a portable listening device. Recorded Books offers a list of devices they have tested with NetLibrary eAudiobooks. This list does not reflect all the portable devices available. There are other devices on the market that also have the required features. Library patrons have reported success using the NetLibrary eAudiobook service with the following MP3 players, all of which support bookmarking: Downloading eAudiobooks on Public PCs at Cook Library District Libraries eAudiobooks may be downloaded to your USB drive at Cook Memorial Library or Evergreen Interim Library.
Listening to eAudiobooks on public PCs is not recommended. Licenses downloaded on these PCs are available for only one user session. The eAudiobook file is then unavailable for you for the remainder of your checkout period. |
