What are eAudiobooks?

You may already be familiar with our audiobook collection of over 5,000 professional readings of books on CD and cassette for adults and children.

eAudiobooks are digital versions of audiobooks that are available via the Internet. They can be played on your computer with compatible software and may be transferred to a wide range of compatible portable devices, including portable music players, portable media centers, Pocket PCs and select smartphone devices. iPods are not compatible with NetLibrary's eAudiobooks service (options).

If you are considering purchasing a portable listening device, see our purchasing suggestions for a list of features required for the best eAudiobook listening experience.

4. Checkout and Download

eAudiobooks check out for 21 days. You may have a maximum of 10 eAudiobooks checked out at one time. It is best to download an eAudiobook on the computer on which you intend to use the file; however, eAudiobooks can be downloaded to your USB drive on a public PC at Cook Memorial Library or Evergreen Interim Library and activated at home. Learn more.

  1. Click the Download this Audiobook link for the desired eAudiobook title.
  2. Select a download option: CD or radio. A File Download dialog box will appear.
    • Choose CD if you plan to transfer to a portable device or if you have a high-speed Internet connection. CD offers high-fidelity playback.
    • Choose radio if you have dial-up Internet access and do not intend to transfer to a portable device. Radio provides faster download speed, but sound quality is reduced and radio-quality downloads cannot be transferred to a portable device.
  3. Click Save or Open.
    • Click Save to download the file to the location of your choice, then open the file to acquire and activate the user license. This option takes less time to download the file. Note: NetLibrary highly recommends this option.
    • Click Open to download the file and launch your media player.
  4. Open the eAudiobook using your media player software. The first time the eAudiobook file is opened, your media player will connect to the Internet and acquire and activate the user license for the computer being used.
  5. Listen to your eAudiobook or transfer the file to a portable listening device.
  6. When the license expires, the eAudiobook becomes unusable. You may renew your checkout or manually delete the eAudiobook file.

Transfer to a Portable Listening Device

Before transferring an eAudiobook to a portable device, you must open it once on your computer to acquire and activate the user license for the eAudiobook. You can then transfer the title to the portable device using your media player.

Please refer to your media player software's help section for instructions on transferring files to your portable device.

NetLibrary offers instructions for transferring eAudioboks to portable devices using Windows Media Player v. 9 and 10.

In Windows Media Player v. 10, this information and more can be found in Help/Using the Player/Synchronizing content to devices/Synchronizing media items to your device/To synchronize content manually.

Renew

An eAudiobook can be renewed 3 times. You may renew an eAudiobook at any point during the checkout period. The renewal extends your checkout for 21 days from the time of the renewal.

  1. Using the computer on which you originally downloaded the eAudiobook, log in to your NetLibrary account with your username and password.
  2. Click the My Checked Out Items link in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
  3. Click the Download this Audiobook link for the desired title.
  4. Click the Renew your checkout for 21 days link. A new user license will be acquired and activated. A message confirming renewal of the eAudiobook should appear at the top of the page.
  5. If you have transferred the eAudiobook to a portable device, you must re-synchronize your portable device to update its expiration date.

If you attempt to open an expired eAudiobook from your media player, you will be prompted to log into NetLibrary and renew checkout.

eAudiobooks may be downloaded to your USB drive at Cook Memorial Library or Evergreen Interim Library.

  1. Click Save during checkout and download to select the USB drive as the location for the file.
    • To listen on your home computer or transfer the eAudiobook to a portable device, DO NOT open the file on a public PC.
