Congratulations to our First Annual Digital Photo Contest Winners! A Special Thanks to our Judge: Photographer Chip Williams
Mr. Williams says about Natalie's photo: "Natalie's photo adheres to my personal photo-mantra of "get close enough to the photo subject that you yourself start to get uncomfortable". As a result, Natalie has created a very intimate portrait and detailed study of this reptile. As a viewer, I feel like I'm right there in the moment. The texture of the skin and the position of the body lends a three dimensional effect to the photograph. Natalie's composition is very nice. She avoided a common pitfall of putting the reptile's face dead center in the middle of the frame and instead offset the lizard's eyes frame right ever so slightly. This photo is also a lot about what Natalie decided to not include in her cropping of the picture. By moving in very close to the lizard, she eliminated all but the necessary essentials to this lizards environment (rock, sand, and out focus plants in the background).
Mr. Williams says about Jovana's photo: "Jovana's study of the swallowtail butterfly against the pavement provided a strong contrast in texture and form. It was an excellent subject to focus on and I can see why it caught his eye. The image could have been made stronger by moving in much closer and filling more of the frame with the butterfly and also not centering it in the frame. The repetitive nature of the asphalt is great but we don't need so much of it. The photographers juxtaposition of nature versus the manmade, industrial world is a great visual statement."
Mr. Williams says about Brian's photo: "Brian composed a very nice point of view shot over the shoulder of either a librarian or patron of the library pulling a book from the shelf. The composition follows the "rule of thirds" very well. Technically, it is properly exposed with the on-camera flash and is a well executed photo from a technical and compositional viewpoint. The photo does raise the question of what am I learning from this point of view shot about the person looking for a book or the library environment he or she is in? I'm not sure the photograph fully answers that question."
Thank you to everyone who participated in our contest!
