Renewing Options

Print

A patron asked, What are my options for renewing library materials?

Renewals on most items are available for two additional loan periods, if no holds are pending and the item has not been billed for replacement. However, neither eBooks nor eAudiobooks can be renewed, nor can Hot Picks. To request a renewal of an Interlibrary Loan item, contact a Reference Desk at 847-362-2330.

Renewals of other items may be done in person, online in your library account, or by calling 847-362-0438. You will be asked for your library card number and the barcodes of the items when you call.

Here's the scoop on renewing online:

1. Go to My Account.

2. Select the materials you want to renew by checking the boxes in the RENEW column and then click the Renew Selected button. To renew everything at once, click the Renew All button.

3. A confirmation screen will appear. Confirm that you want to renew the items listed by clicking the Yes button.

4. Check the STATUS column for information on the success or failure of each renewal. If the renewal is successful, a new due date will appear in the STATUS column.

Online Encyclopedias

Print

Another question from last fall’s survey: Does the library have subscriptions to online encyclopedias, such as the Britannica?

We do have the Britannica and several others available on our web site. To access them, Click Research a Topic on our front page. On the Research a Topic page, you will see a tab for an A-Z list of all our databases, one for finding newspaper and magazine articles, and a third tab for online encyclopedias.

When you visit that page you will find links to Britannica and Britannica for Kids, as well as the Americana Encyclopedia, the Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, the Oxford English Dictionary, and five different versions of the World Book for various audiences. Have your library card handy when you visit this page, because you will need to enter your card number to search the encyclopedias.

Drive-Up Development

Print

If you typically visit our Cook Park location, have you tried picking up your Holds at our Drive-Up Window yet? If you are ready to try it, just remember that you must specify the Drive-Up Window as your pickup location when you place the Hold. It’s as easy as 1-2-3:

  1. Choose “Drive-up Window at Cook Park” when placing your Hold.
  2. Wait to receive notice that your Hold is available for pickup.
  3. Drive up, present your library card, and pick up your Hold.

In the past we were unable to offer the Drive-Up Window as an option for Interlibrary Loan items, but we are pleased to announce that now you can choose from all four pickup options when placing an Interlibrary Loan request: Aspen Drive, Bookmobile, Cook Park Inside or Drive-Up Window.

Making Lists in the Catalog

Print

This week's question: How can I make a list in the catalog that won't disappear when I leave the page?

Each record in the catalog has an Add to Cart option. Use that to fill your cart with items you want to save, then click the My Cart link in the upper right corner.

You will see the items you have selected, which you can then Request (all at once if you like!), Remove from List, Save to List, or Email.

f you choose Save to List, you will be prompted to enter your library card number. You can either add the items to an existing list or create a new one. The next time you go to My Account and click on the My Lists button, your lists will all appear.

Income Tax Season

Print

How are you coming with your income taxes? Need some forms, instructions or publications? Here are some options for you:

All federal tax forms, instructions and publications are available free on the IRS web site. As long as you have Adobe Reader installed, all forms can be printed and some can even be completed online and then printed with your information. You can also learn about e-filing options on the IRS site.

With the Adobe Reader installed, you can also access and print Illinois State Tax Forms and publications. Need forms from other states? 50states.com will get you to those.

If you prefer not to print out forms yourself or e-file, you can find many of the most popular forms and instructions for individual taxpayers available at both our Cook Park and Aspen Drive locations.
