Were you one of the thousands of people who visited the Aspen Drive Library at its grand opening on July 10, 2010? Our Vernon Hills location has filled a great need for library services in the southern part of the library district. We’ve welcomed over 250,000 visitors each year to Aspen, who have checked out more than 5.5 million titles since that grand opening.
Regular visitors to Aspen Drive know that its popularity has brought about challenges, including inadequate space for children and teens and limited quiet areas for adults.
Recognizing the need for additional space, the Library Board of Trustees approved a strategic plan in 2015 that included the evaluation of space needs at Aspen Drive. A year later, a board report detailed these space limitations, resulting in the hiring of an architect to provide design options and cost estimates for an expansion to the existing building.
In January 2018, the board officially approved going forward with a construction plan to add a 15,000-square-foot addition to Aspen Drive Library. Half of the addition will be at ground level, and the other half will be a basement for future development. The new addition will accommodate a significantly larger children’s area and enable expanded space in the existing building for additional space for adults. The board intends to finance the expansion without an increase in the Library District’s property tax rate or any reductions to services, collections or operating hours at either of our locations. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2019 with an anticipated opening by the end of that year.
