Cook Memorial Public Library District seeks a dedicated and dynamic Library Director to lead, manage, and inspire a staff of over 140 employees at two full-service libraries:  Cook Park Library, Libertyville, IL; and Aspen Drive Library, Vernon Hills, IL; as well as a Bookmobile.  The district serves nearly 60,000 residents of Libertyville, Green Oaks, Mettawa, Indian Creek, most of Vernon Hills, and neighborhoods in eastern Mundelein and western Lake Forest.  CMPLD constructed a new facility in Vernon Hills in 2010, and expanded and remodeled its original building in Libertyville in 2011.  A strategic plan is in place for fiscal years 2016-2018. 

Voted one of Library Journal’s 2014 America’s Star Libraries, Cook Memorial Public Library District continues to be the highest circulating library in Lake County and the eighth highest circulating library in Illinois.  CMPLD has also been recognized by the Illinois Library Association for creative programming and community collaborations.

Upon the retirement of our current Director, we are looking for a leader who can manage an operating budget of $9 million; appreciate working with a committed, seven-member, elected Board of Trustees, an experienced management team, and a strong, collaborative staff. 

Vision, leadership, energy, fiscal acumen, and exemplary communication skills are a must, along with a commitment to high professional, ethical service and standards.  The ability to foster strong community relations is imperative as well.  The Cook Memorial Public Library Director will be comfortable with technology and eager to experiment with technological innovation that supports the library’s mission.  An MLS or MLIS from an accredited college or university, and eight years of library service with three years as a public Library Director or Assistant Director are required.

Fiction, Movies and Music Manager

Due to a retirement, the Cook Memorial Public Library District is seeking an innovative, well-read, and tech-savvy manager with a strong commitment to customer service to manage the library’s fiction, movies and music (FMM) services.

Hours: Overtime exempt.  Full-Time 37.5 hours per week; includes evenings and one weekend a month in rotation.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads, hires, trains and appraises performance of FMM staff.  
  • Assists in the selection, development and maintenance of fiction, movies and music collections.  
  • Oversees FMM programming and book clubs.
  • Works public desks, answering reference questions and providing reader’s advisory assistance.  
  • Assists patrons with library digital collections.
  • Operates and performs basic troubleshooting of library computers and equipment.
  • Plans and budgets for expenses.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; MLS/MLIS strongly preferred.
  • Significant library experience in a readers’ advisory/popular materials service area and two years of supervisory experience required.
  • Extensive knowledge of fiction authors and titles required.  Knowledge of movies, and music strongly preferred.
  • Strong technology aptitude.  Proficiency with digital formats and devices, including tablets, e-readers, and laptops.
  • Demonstrated readers’ advisory skills required.
  • Must be able to lift/move library materials up to 30 pounds and operate automated equipment in the workplace as required with or without accommodation.
  • Must be able to attend training sessions and meetings outside the library and visit all library locations.
  • Ability to work scheduled shifts at Cook Park Library in Libertyville and Aspen Drive Library in Vernon Hills.

Salary:  $52,018

Children’s Librarian (part-time)

The Cook Memorial Public Library District is seeking a friendly, tech-savvy and customer-service focused children’s librarian to serve patrons at the Aspen Drive Library in Vernon Hills.  Position is based at Aspen Drive but may also include shifts at the Cook Park Library in Libertyville.

Hours: Part-time 19 hours per week; includes evenings and weekends in rotation.  

Responsibilities:

  • Works public desks, answering reference questions and providing reader’s advisory assistance.
  • Assists patrons with library digital collections.
  • Operates and performs basic troubleshooting of library computers and equipment. 
  • Performs collection management tasks, including selection and weeding, for children's materials as assigned. 
  • Plans, prepares and presents programs for children.

Requirements:

  • MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited library school or current enrollment in an ALA-accredited program. 
  • Knowledge of all genres of children's literature and its age appropriateness.
  • Experience working with children in a school and/or public library setting, preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience with general print reference materials, databases, and Internet resources.
  • Knowledge and experience with digital formats and devices.
  • Technology aptitude, including proficiency with electronic equipment and interest in emerging technology.
  • Ability to work scheduled shifts at Cook Park Library in Libertyville and Aspen Drive Library in Vernon Hills.

Salary: $20.14/hour for MLIS degree / $15.25 hour for MLIS in progress.

High School Page Internship

Cook Memorial Public Library District is seeking a friendly, responsible high school student to work in the Circulation Department at Cook Park and Aspen Drive libraries.

Hours:

  • Approximately 8–10 hours per week with evenings and weekend availability required.
  • Length of position coincides with school year and will vary, possibly continuing into summer.

Responsibilities:

  • Phoning patrons regarding reserve items
  • Working the Circulation Desk, checking materials in and out to library patrons
  • Shelving items and reserves
  • Providing assistance to patrons using copy and self-checkout machines

Requirements:

  • Will be enrolled as a Junior or Senior High School Student in the fall of 2015
  • Volunteer work in a library desirable but not mandatory
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Comfortable using computers
  • Detail-oriented
  • Good organizational skills
  • Reliable and willing to fill in extra hours when necessary
  • Must be able to train and work at both Cook Park and Aspen Drive libraries

Rate of Pay:
$8.99  per hour

Summer Associates

Cook Memorial Public Library District is seeking enthusiastic individuals who enjoy working with children and families to assist with summer reading club activities.

Hours: May 26 through August 5, 2015
15–30 hours per week, may include evenings and weekends

Primary Duties: 

All assistants:

  • Register patrons (all ages) for the reading club
  • Foster enthusiasm for participation in reading club and other library activities
  • Assist patrons in monitoring their progress in the club
  • Organize workspace and maintain materials related to reading club

Assistants might also:

  • Organize and shelve library materials
  • Organize crafts and outdoor activities for patrons
  • Prepare program materials
  • Enter registration data for all patrons
  • Perform other administrative duties, as assigned

Requirements:

  • Excellent written and spoken communication, numeracy, and literacy skills
  • Enjoy interacting with the public, especially children
  • Must demonstrate willingness or experience in working with children
  • Willingness to work outdoors
  • Ability to perform data entry on a PC
  • Volunteer work in a library desirable but not mandatory
  • Must be able to lift/move library materials up to 30 pounds and operate automated equipment in the workplace as required
  • Reliable transportation to/from library
  • High School diploma required; some college desirable

Pay Scale:
$9.40 per hour
