Storytime is here!

Hello Readers!

I am so excited to share with you all the fun things the Children’s Department have been doing in our Storytimes this season! This past week has seen the library full of songs, rhymes and wonderful stories.

On Tuesday and Wednesday night, Miss Sue and Miss Heather share delightful stories all about families: The Family Book by Todd Parr; The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant; A Family Like Yours by Rebecca Kai Dotlich; and Panda Whispers by Mary Beth Owens

On Wednesday, Miss Deb  took a visit to Sesame Street, sharing Big Bird’s Color Game by Tom Cooke, and singing the “Everybody Wash” song with Bert and Ernie!

On Thursday, babies enjoyed lots of fun music and fingerplays, and the great book That’s Not My Train by Fiona Watts with Miss Debbie and Miss Molly

On Tuesday and Thursday morning, Miss Debbie shared stories and songs from around the house with toddlers, reading Bunny Bungalow by Cynthia Rylant and singing this fun song:

This House is Our House

(To the tune of This Land is Your Land by Woody Guthrie)

This house is our house, this house is our house

With all these rooms where we can read.

We can read in the kitchen, or in the bathroom.

We can read in the living room, or in the bedroom.

We can read in the play room, or on the stairs,

Cozy up and read together in our house.

We all had so much fun sharing stories with you! We hope to see you in the library next week.

Happy Reading!

Miss Heather

A Little "Break" for Paige and A Guest Blogger!

Dear Readers,

It's time for me, Paige Turner, to take a little "break"

and introduce our "eggs"citing Guest Blogger, Miss Heather!

You might have met her in one of our Tuesday night storytimes

or at a Tween program. She's so much fun!!

egg breaking

With our Storytime Session now going on, we thought

you might like to know what each Storytime session

this winter is featuring in the way of books, music or

activities.  The session leader will report in to our

Guest Blogger, and she will post these things on our

weekly Children's Department blog that you are now

reading.  So, it is possible for Miss Heather to report

in on Miss Heather!  Cool, huh?

Of course  I, Paige, may report in every now and then

during this time because I'll miss you too much not to be

in touch!

Thanking our Guest Blogger in advance,

Paige Turner!

Take Comfort!

Dear Readers,

Even though we haven't (yet) had much snow, there's still

nothing like wrapping yourself in a quilt to read, read, read

the cold and gray days away!

And guess what?  We're offering just the class you can take

for learning to make that quilt yourself!  Inspired by the

beloved book by Patricia Polacco, THE KEEPING QUILT,

2nd and 3rd graders can use the basic skill of tying to quickly

tied quilt1

construct a quilt.  In the process, a memory quilt will be made by

adding special shapes and colors. The size of the quilt will be

54" x 54".

Both library locations will offer this class:

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18 @Cook Park at 4:15

                          or

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7 @Aspen Drive at 4:15

Registration is required.

Knotting away,

Paige Turner!

New Year Celebrations

Dear Readers,

Happy New Year!

new years eve

Did you stay up until midnight on December

31st to ring in the year of 2012?  Was there horn

blowing, confetti throwing, hats and fireworks?

If you were to celebrate Chinese New Year yourself

later this month, fireworks could be a part of that

celebrating as well!

I thought you might like to know more about Chinese New

Year so have included a link for you to click on yourself.

Just in case you don't feel like clicking, here's some info

right here right now below the link:

Here's the link to http://www.123chinesenewyear.com/2012.html

As the chinese new year falls on a different date every year, the question on everybody's mind is

When is Chinese New Year 2012?

Chinese lunar New Year is commonly known as Chinese New Year or spring festival. This is an

important annual festival celebrated by Chinese round the globe. The festival is based on Chinese

calendar and starts on the first month (as per the Chinese calendar) and ends on the fifteenth

day of the first month. Chinese new year 2012 will be celebrated on 23rd of January

and is the year of Dragon, the most auspicious animal as per the Chinese zodiac. This new

year features contemporary and traditional Chinese cultural activities, dances, festivities, singing,

Chinese opera, arts and crafts, karaoke competition, innumerable stalls of culinary delights,

lion dances, chess competitions, children’s events, calligraphy, dragon parades to name a few.

The Chinese New Year festival is open to all, irrespective of age barriers. They key here is to

explore the rich Chinese cultural heritage by being a part of it. In present years, the festival has

turned out to be one of the most celebrated festivals. Most countries declare an official holiday

on Chinese New Year and year 2012 is not an exception as well. Lunar New Year is known as

Tet Nguyen Dan in Vietnam, Setsubun in Japan and Korean New Year in South Korea. The

Chinese New Year forms a great annual event in the Chinese communities. You will find

families and friends gathering for reunion dinner and markets buzzed with activities.

Chinese New Year is celebrated round the globe including countries like Singapore, Indonesia,

Mainland China, Macau, Hong Kong SAR, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Festivities also take

place in different countries with major Chinese ethnic populations. Though Chinese New Year

is celebrated with pomp and glory in Japan, Cambodia and Philippines, yet it’s not a public

holiday here.

Happy New Year to one and all,

Paige Turner!

What to Do When There's NO Snow on Winter Break

Dear Readers,

 snow globe

What?  No snow on Winter Break?  How can this be? I,

Paige Turner, would like to offer you some suggestions for

having some fun even if no snow ever shows up while you are

on Break!  This list of 10 will give you ideas of making your

own fun without spending a penny!

1.  Come to the library!  We have books, music CD's, DVD's

and all sorts of "treats" to take home.  Longing for snow?

Read winter books!  Brrr...you can almost imagine the snow

    falling down now, can't you?

 library

2.  Make a bouncing snow ball by collecting all the rubber bands

you can find in your house.  Wind them around and around a

core of a scrunched up rubber band and keep going until the

ball is a size you want or you run out of rubber bands.

***Be careful when you throw this ball!!***

3.  Make a miniature snow fort with ice cubes from your freezer.

Before you make your fort, take out a large baking pan to hold

the ice cubes so they don't drip all over the place and make your

     mom get upset.

4.  Another option for making a fort is to make a little igloo out

    of cotton balls.

5.  Use circular paper coffee filters and cut out beautiful snow-

     flakes from this paper.

6.  Have you lost a mitten or sock yet this winter?  If so, make a

puppet out of the lone sock, glove or mitten.

 hot cocoa

7.  Learn how to make a cup of hot cocoa from scratch.  Ask an

adult to help you locate a recipe from a cookbook or do an

internet search.  Then make the cocoa together!

8.  Have supper for breakfast or breakfast for dinner.

9.  Do any craft project and apply silver or white glitter to

represent snow.  This works well on holiday cards you've

gotten this season with wintery scenes!

 glitter

10.  Wear your pajamas all day and pretend you're having a

snow day and there's no school!  Oh, wait...this is true

      except for the snow part.

With a thought bubble of snow falling,

Paige Turner!
