Andrea’s Pick of the Week: In Five Years by Rebecca Serle

What would you do if your best friend falls in love with the man you’re destined to be with? That’s the premise of this wonderful love story. Dannie Kohan is a compulsively organized New York lawyer with specific plans for her future: the perfect job, the perfect apartment, and the perfect fiancé – David, an investment banker whose approach to life matches hers. Then one day, she suddenly has a premonition of her life in five years. She’s making love to a stranger, in a completely unfamiliar apartment that they seem to share. The experience is so real that Dannie is shaken to the core. She tries to push it aside, until her best friend Bella introduces her to her new boyfriend — the guy from Dannie’s premonition. Dannie’s struggle with how to reconcile her well-planned life with this surprise starts to drive all her life choices.

This is a book that starts out in a conventional way, but it’s definitely not a conventional romance. I thought I knew how it would end but I was wrong! It’s not just about romantic love; it’s about love of friends, the importance of family, and about how we treat the people we care about most. It’s also a story about New York City, which hovers over Dannie with every decision she makes. Dannie and Bella, while a little stereotypical as polar opposite best friends, have an enviable, beautiful relationship. In Five Years is a surprising, poignant story of friendship, love, and grief that will stay with you long after you put it down.
