Girl Underwater by Claire Kells
A swimmer on a highly ranked university team is one of 5 survivors of a plane crash on a Rocky Mountain lake. Two elements appealed to me in the description of this book. As a life-long swimmer I enjoy reading about competitive and recreational swimming. And the ultimate suspense story to me is one of survival against the elements. The difficult steps Avery takes toward mental recovery after the physical trauma adds another dimension to this story.
Fear the Darkness by Becky Masterman
Brigid Quinn, former FBI agent, is adjusting to a “normal” life in Tucson with a husband and friends after years of seeing evil in all its forms. She’s a tough yet compassionate P.I. who takes in her 17 year old niece Gemma Kate who has some disturbing interests. This is the 2nd in a series after Rage Against the Dying and I’ll be waiting for the next one featuring a flawed but likeable investigator.
Where They Found Her by Kimberly McCreight
When teenagers grow up in a small town and never leave or suddenly come back as adults, there are bound to be secrets just waiting to be unearthed. A journalist uncovers her community’s darkest secrets after an infant’s body is found in the woods. This is a suspenseful mystery with some surprising twists.
The Precious One by Marisa de los Santos
Taisie receives an unexpected invitation from her estranged father who abandoned his family 17 years ago and started a new life with a young wife and baby. Returning to her home town, she meets Willow, her over-protected sister, who is clearly adored by their father. Taisie and Willow alternate chapters that culminate in surprising revelations and the chance to mend broken relationships. A novel about sisters, fathers, friendship and second chances, this is the type of warmhearted book that brings comfort and calm after my usual diet of mystery and suspense.
