The Anniversary, a thriller by Alex Finlay, delivers a uniquely structured and gripping mystery that might just be his best work yet. Spanning a decade, from 1992 to 2001, the story is divided into ten chronological parts, each set on May 1 of a successive year. This structure creates a steady forward progression while deepening the narrative and intensifying the overwhelming sense of dread.
Why May 1? For Midwesterners, the date is infamous. Known as Death Day, it marks the annual return of an elusive serial killer who strikes on this day—and only this day. Some victims survive the brutal attacks; others do not. But one thing remains the same: the pattern never changes. This annual countdown adds a haunting layer of tension, making each return to Death Day feel more ominous than the last. It’s a striking framework for a nostalgic mystery, and Finlay executes it to a chilling effect.
At the heart of the story are Jules and Quinn, two young people whose lives first intersect in 1992 as high school seniors. Jules is popular and destined for fame, and Quinn is lonely and searching for a purpose. They’re a mismatched pair, but after the events of May 1, 1992, they find themselves forever linked—even if their paths don’t cross again for years.
Finlay’s short, momentum-driven chapters create an easy reading experience that constantly propels you forward. This bingeable quality is intensified by Jules and Quinn’s increasingly desperate search for justice. The pacing is truly relentless and had me hooked until the very last page. Add in the warmth and nostalgia of its ’90s setting, and the result is a richly layered story woven into a compelling mystery. Beyond its format, the cultural references—Pearl Jam concerts, dial-up internet, 90s fashion, and more—were easily one of my favorite parts of the book.
For readers in search of a unique thriller that’s infused with nostalgia and character development, The Anniversary is a must-read this season. It’s fast-paced, emotionally resonant, and filled with unforgettable moments. If you enjoyed The Night Shift by Alex Finlay or God of the Woods by Liz Moore, you’re certain to find a lot to love here.
