New Episode of NBR: The Beauty of Blackness

The newest episode of Nonfiction Book Report is available on the Library’s YouTube Channel. In honor of Black History Month, Michelle and I talk about two Newish Noteworthy Nonfiction books that highlight the Beauty of Blackness.

BLK Art cover

Michelle shared BLK ART : the audacious legacy of black artists and models in western art by Zaria Ware. This coffee-table adjacent book is a fun and fact-filled introduction to the dismissed Black art masters and models who shook up the world. We learn about the black models and artists who worked in Europe and America prior to the 20th century.

Elegant. Refined. Exclusionary. Interrupted. The foundations of the fine art world are shaking.

The Black Joy Project book cover

I highlighted The Black joy project by Kleaver Cruz. From a single Instagram post, The Black Joy Project is a testament to the fact that Black Joy is everywhere AND Black Joy is an act of resistance. As someone who believes in the power of words as the means to write the stories that do not exist, Cruz’s hardcopy representation of his digital and real-world initiative of the same name is a beautiful testament to the power of positive thinking.

New episodes of NBR: Nonfiction Book Report will drop every second Friday of the month. Tune into our next episode on Friday March 8th, when we’ll each share a nonfiction memoir.
