You know you can come to us for great reading recommendations, but we do much more than read here at the library! Staffers share what they’ve been listening to lately, whether it be a music album, a podcast, or yes even an audiobook or two.

I’ve been listening to Sufjan Steven’s newest album Carrie & Lowell pretty much non-stop since it was released March 31. Yes, that’s several weeks of listening to a beautiful but just plain sad record that deals with the death of Stevens’ mother.
Now that the weather is getting warmer, I’m also wanting to listen to loud and singable rock which, for me, means lots of St. Vincent. She won a Grammy this year for Digital Witness, which is getting lots of play in my car. I’m also listening to 2011’s Strange Mercy quite a bit as well. Both albums boast great music and great lyrics and I can’t enough of either.

The new album I have been listening to lately is Tomorrow is My Turn by Rhiannon Giddens.
From Heresy Records: “Rhiannon Giddens is an American musician. She is known as the lead singer, violinist, banjo player and a founding member of the Grammy-winning country, blues and old-time music Carolina Chocolate Drops. She is a native of Greensboro, North Carolina and a 2000 graduate of Oberlin Conservatory where she studied opera.”
I really like her strong voice and her selection of old-time and blues music.
Andrea – Fiction, Movies & Music
Album: Chaos and the Calm by James Bay. I love singer-songwriters and he’s excellent.
Audiobook: As You Wish by Cary Elwes – the story of one of my favorite movies, and it’s got a bunch of the original cast members’ voicing it.
Nate – Emerging Technologies Librarian
I’ve been on a late80s/early90s noisy angst-driven kick lately after listening to Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth read her memoir Girl In A Band on CD-audiobook. I’ve been cranking Daydream Nation with the windows down on the way home from work. A perfect soundtrack as the days get warmer and the windows come down. Apologies to all other drivers heading north on rte. 83 for the distracting Teen Age Riot happening in my Honda Civic.

NPR has the podcasts I enjoy – Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me, On the Media and Serial. Love being able to listen to these shows when it’s convenient for me.
