A free workshop on using and interpreting maps for genealogy research is offered by the Burlington County Genealogy Society of Burlington, Wisconsin on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at 7 p.m. in Burlington, Wisconsin. The public is invited to attend this educational workshop.
The presentation, “Using Maps in Genealogy,” will explore how lands are described, and acquired from colonial days to the present. Attendees will learn how to find, read and understand legal descriptions that will enable them to find where their ancestors lived in this country.
“Our ancestors came to this country to own their own farms, lands and property. Most succeeded in this proposition,” said Jay Wittak, presenter. He loves maps, and had a 30 year career with the US Forest Service. He worked on four National Forests handling various land issues. He and his wife have also traveled to Europe to ancestral towns in Ireland and the Czech Republic.
Participants are invited to bring land descriptions they may have for information, questions and answers.
The workshop will be held at the Burlington Gateway Building, 496 McCanna Parkway, Burlington, Wisconsin; the last building at the end of the Parkway. Free WIFI is available. Parking is free and the building is handicap accessible. Refreshments are served.
