Weekend Read: Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

Eleanor Oliphant is not your typical literary heroine.

She is socially incompetent and never mingles with other people. Her office mates find her odd and make fun of her weirdness and odd appearance. When she is not at her office job, she hangs out in her shabby apartment, eating the same meal and drinking copious amounts of vodka. Her one contact is when “Mummy’’ calls every Wednesday evening and verbally abuses her, which pushes Eleanor to drink more vodka.

Author Gail Honeyman

Eleanor’s dull, lonely life dramatically changes one afternoon when she witnesses an elderly man fall in the street. One of her work colleagues, Raymond, also sees what happens and insists that they help. Soon Eleanor is learning how to socially interact with Raymond and the rescued man named Sammy. She learns to come out of her shell and become more adventurous. Eventually, she confronts the demons from her past that caused her to withdraw from living as much as possible.

This is the kind of book that shows how kindness and friendship can change a person’s life. Eleanor starts off as a strange, unlikeable character, but I grew to really care about her and cheer her on. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine is heartrending and heartwarming novel with an unforgettable heroine. It is remarkable for a debut novel.
