Have you ever played the Game of LIFE? Surprisingly, a version of this game has existed since 1860! In many ways, this game resembles the types of documents and experience we try to collect and understand as genealogists. We look for records for births, marriages, and deaths. We try to find school and career records as well. Of course, we look for other items like letters, postcards, and photographs, and each of these gives a snapshot of our ancestor’s LIFE and enhances what we know about them. Starting in June, you can play LIFE: Ancestry Edition and learn more about U.S. history through your ancestor’s LIFE!
This summer, the Library is celebrating “We the People” and America 250 which commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This is a great opportunity to explore U.S. history, and genealogy is a great way to learn the stories that enrich and challenge the country’s long history. Plus, it is a great way to get to know your unique heritage and personal history. Consider joining us throughout the summer for our America 250 genealogy programs!
Speaking of unique, every country produces its own types of records which are the building blocks of genealogy, and learning how to do family history research in the United States is somewhat peculiar as a result. Consider exploring these American genealogy resources for ideas and suggestions. These publications are great for those who are just getting started with genealogy as well as those who have been researching their family history for many years. There is always something new to learn and explore!
As you learn more about U.S. history and American genealogy, consider playing LIFE: Ancestry Edition this summer! Collect 10 records that document significant LIFE events for your ancestors and answer related questions to complete the game. From June 1 to August 31, you can pick up a packet at the Aspen Drive or Cook Park Adult Information Desk. Each packet contains a game board, questions, and helpful resources. Complete the game and then enter to win genealogy and gardening goodies! Everyone who finishes will Spin to Win a special button.
Good luck and have fun!
